WCMRC would like to congratulate the recipients of our 2025/2026 post-secondary scholarships: Edith Jobin, Kelsey Wasylenki, and Tyler Wright.
Edith is currently in her second year of the Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Victoria, building upon more than 20 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, including working with the Canadian Coast Guard and in remote northern communities. She volunteers as a First Aid Officer and crew member with the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, with her motivation stemming from a commitment to building healthier, more resilient communities, particularly in coastal and remote areas where environmental and health challenges often intersect.
Kelsey is pursuing a Diploma of Home Economics at the University of British Columbia to become a full-time home economics teacher. She brings a strong background in education, having earned a Master’s in Education and teaching experience in Math, Science, and Foods and Sewing. Her essay on using Ideonella sakaiensis (plastic-eating bacteria) to reduce plastic waste from our oceans was inspiring.
Tyler is entering his third year in the Resource and Environmental Management program at Simon Fraser University. He is particularly interested in pursuing a career in emergency management, with a focus on oil spill response or wildfire management. In his essay, he examined the spread of the invasive European Green Crab found on Canadian coasts, its significant ecological impacts, and the importance of incorporating traditional ecological knowledge from the indigenous communities that have lived along these coasts for thousands of years.
