About Us

WCMRC is Canada’s only Transport Canada-certified Response Organization for marine oil spills on the West Coast. With a mission to protect our coastal waters, we ensure a constant state of readiness to respond effectively to oil spill emergencies. We’re looking for an experienced and dynamic Director of Operations to lead a team dedicated to environmental protection and operational excellence.

 

About the Role

As the Director of Operations, you’ll oversee our operations department, ensuring readiness, safety, and compliance with federal regulations. You’ll lead the planning, maintenance, and deployment of personnel and equipment across WCMRC’s geographic response area. This pivotal role will collaborate closely with the senior leadership team to align operational goals with corporate objectives.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership: Oversee and inspire a team of about 150 personnel across 8 response bases, including over 80 vessels, 40 vehicles, and extensive equipment.
  • Readiness: Ensure WCMRC’s equipment, training programs, and operations meet certification requirements and industry best practices.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with senior leaders to develop and execute corporate goals, annual departmental plans, and budgets.
  • Safety Culture: Promote safety leadership and maintain compliance with all health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Operational Excellence: Work with area managers to execute training programs, maintain equipment readiness, and lead large-scale spill response drills.
  • Community Engagement: Build relationships with First Nations, local communities, and industry stakeholders.
  • ICS Expertise: Serve as a key leader in Incident Command System (ICS) roles during spill responses and drills.

 

What We’re Looking For

  • Education & Experience: Post-secondary degree/diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience, with at least 15 years of related experience.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead large, diverse teams in high-stakes environments.
  • Marine Knowledge: Strong understanding of the marine industry, Transport Canada regulations, and marine equipment operations.
  • Technical Expertise: Competency in training, maintenance, and large-scale contingency planning.
  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong planning, budgeting, and decision-making abilities under pressure.

 

Preferred Experience

  • Hands-on experience in oil spill response, including ICS roles in actual events.
  • Familiarity with BC’s political and regulatory landscape.
  • Expertise in marine equipment maintenance processes.

Additional Details

This role requires regular travel throughout BC and occasional after-hours availability.

 

Salary: $154,278 – $181,503 per annum
