Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) is a Transport Canada certified Response Organization, whose mandate is to ensure there is a state of preparedness in place and to mitigate the impact when an oil spill occurs. This includes the protection of wildlife, economic and environmental sensitivities, and the safety of both the responders and the public.

WCMRC is now recruiting a Full-Time Controller to join our team at our Burnaby, BC office, reporting to the Director of Finance. As a Controller, this position provides oversight in the day-to-day management of all activities related to WCMRC’s financial reporting and accounting, implementation and monitoring of financial controls, banking, invoicing and record keeping.

Some of the key responsibilities include:

  • Manage the strategic and day-to-day operations of the accounting team, ensuring that all capital and operational financial reporting meets the needs of the organization, its Board of Directors, government and lenders.
  • Establish and implement internal controls, and finance policies and procedures, to ensure that the organization’s day-to-day operational activities are efficient and effective and are in-line with approved strategic initiatives and budgetary allocations.
  • Set annual departmental goals, objectives and action plans with staff and maintain accountability for objectives in support of corporate goals and performance.
  • Support and develop department personnel through performance management and succession planning that provides clear goals, coaching, training, positive recognition, as well as timely and meaningful performance reviews.
  • Oversee the creation and approval of Corporate financial reports including Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Statement of Cash Flows and all related notes and appendices
  • Oversee monthly close and preparation of Financial Statements and all associated back up (i.e. review month-end binder)
  • Oversee WCMRC rates and billing policies, and ensure invoicing is accurate and timely
  • Manage the planning, implementation and collection of annual budget setting processes
  • Consult with internal stakeholders and end users in determining financial reporting requirements and implement effective solutions
  • Manage the annual external audit process

We are looking for a candidate who has completed a post-secondary degree or diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A CPA designation is required. We are also looking for a minimum of 10 years of accounting experience and at least 5 years of managerial experience.

Salary range: $126,236 – $148,512 per annum
