WCMRC would like to congratulate the recipients of our 2026/2027 post-secondary scholarships: Niya Irving, Taylor Johncox and Sean Abraham.
Niya is continuing her Bachelor of Arts at Mount Allison University, where she has been drawn to her sociology and geography/environmental studies courses as she explores a career that challenges her, helps others, and deepens her understanding of different cultures, geographies, and nature. She volunteers with her school’s SMILE program in partnership with the YMCA, connecting children and young adults with additional support needs to university students, and brings a long background in competitive soccer and community involvement. Her essay discussed the role of innovation and technology in ocean sustainability, highlighting how drones and uncrewed surface vehicles can support real-time data collection, oil spill detection, and the monitoring of endangered marine wildlife.
Taylor is entering a Bachelor of Medical Science at Dalhousie University, with an interest in pursuing a healthcare career focused on improving the physical health and quality of life of others, whether through medicine or physiotherapy. A dedicated multi-sport athlete who competed at the provincial level in both soccer and basketball, she gives back to her community through coaching, camp counselling, and math tutoring, with a particular passion for being a positive role model for young girls in sport. Her well-researched essay examined how Canada can better use its coastline to benefit the environment, economy, and communities through renewable energy, sustainable fisheries, and the protection of blue carbon ecosystems.
Sean is pursuing a Marine Technology – Navigation program at Georgian College, building on previous degrees in Sociology and Human Resources from McMaster University, with the goal of becoming a Master, Near Coastal in the Canadian merchant fleet. He has earned Dean’s List honours and secured certifications including Bridge Watch Rating and Passenger Safety Management, and is beginning his sea phase as a Navigation Cadet with BC Ferries aboard the Spirit of British Columbia. An active member of the International Ship Masters’ Association and the Company of Master Mariners of Canada, his essay explored how innovation and technology, paired with a well-trained crew and a strong culture of stewardship, will shape the future of ocean sustainability in Canada.
