WCMRC would like to congratulate the recipients of our 2015/16 $1,000 post-secondary scholarships: Spencer Johnston, Soleil Heaney and Daniel Piechnik. This year the students prepared a 500-word essay on the pros and cons of social media in an emergency management situation.
Spencer is currently enrolled at BCIT’s School of Business pursuing a diploma in Marketing Management with the intention of obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he will seek employment in the energy industry. Spencer is a WCMRC trained spill response technician and deckhand. He was recently deployed as a first on-scene responder during the Marathassa spill in English Bay.
Soleil is presently attending the University of Victoria working towards a degree in Child and Youth Care with a double specialization in Early Childhood Education and Indigenous Care. She is passionate about child care, particularly indigenous care, and hopes to have a positive impact on the Aboriginal community.
Daniel is enrolled in UBC’s Bachelor of Commerce Global Supply Chain and Logistics Management program with a minor in International Business. He has a strong interest in the marine shipping industry and will travel to Copenhagen and Singapore next year to learn about best practices. Daniel also works as a boarding agent for Montship.
We wish the winners the best of luck in their future careers.
