WCMRC presents to TMX Ministerial Panel in Vancouver

TMX Panel

Throughout July and August 2016, the TMX Ministerial Panel has been holding a series of meetings along the TMX pipeline and marine corridors in Alberta and British Columbia. The three-member panel represents a new layer of federal oversight for the project. The panel findings are expected to help Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet make its decision on whether to give final approval to the TMX in December.

At these informal sessions, the Panel has “engaged with local communities, stakeholders, and Indigenous groups and identify additional views that could be relevant to the Government’s final decision on the project.”

WCMRC provided comment to the panel at the Vancouver Roundtable on Transportation at the SFU Morris J Wosk Centre for Dialogue on August 16.

While WCMRC neither supports nor opposes the project, spill response and our ability to handle spills has played a central role in the conversation around the Trans Mountain expansion. A lot has been said about spill response, but none of it has been said by the people whose job it is to clean-up spills on the West Coast. We feel it is important for this panel, British Columbians and Canadians to hear the facts about spill response from the people who know the most about it.

WCMRC provided the panel with insight into the current Canadian spill response regime, context behind lingering misconceptions around spill response and described current initiatives from government and industry to enhance spill response on the West Coast.
